First Round Asset Tracker: Tracking Ernie's First Round Picks & Trades

FRAT: First Round Asset Tracker

A General Manager isn't going to hit on every first round draft pick. I think we all can agree on that. I think what makes a good GM in regards to drafting is of course getting the draft pick right more then you get it wrong and recovering from a mistake. In this case, we have Ernie Grunfeld which is notorious for making mistakes for that past 16 years and later I'll compare him to the multiple GM's that were in Toronto for that same span. In this post we're only focusing on his First Round Draft Picks and then track what he did with those assets whether he kept, traded, or let go in free agency. First Round Asset Tracker (FRAT). Here is an example

2007 – 1st Round Draft Pick [DRAFTED AT #16] Nick Young* [TRADED FOR] Nene, Brian Cook, 2015 2nd Round Draft Pick

  • Nene [FREE AGENT 16-17]
  • 2015 2nd Round Draft Pick* [TRADED FOR] Andre Miller and a 2014 2nd Round Draft Pick (Protected)
    • Andre Miller [TRADED FOR] Ramon Sessions [FREE AGENT 16-17]
  • Brian Cook [FREE AGENT 12-13]

Ernie just gets worse by every draft pick and trade
In 2007 Ernie Grunfeld drafted Shooting Guard Nick Young with the #16 pick. Outside of his shooting and some defense in his years as a Wizard he was a part of producing a bad culture here. In 2012, Young was a part of a package deal in a trade for Nene. The "*" you see next to Young's name means he was a part of a package deal on that trade which could include other players, draft picks, cash, and a Trade Player Exception (TPE). This trade actually changed the culture in DC so a win for Ernie here but when you look deeper this costed us three first round draft picks for four years of an older Nene. Nene in a way was a product of the 2007, 2008, and 2011 first round draft picks as you'll see later.

So many misses by Ernie Grunfeld. I'm not surprised but looking at this all at once is pretty ugly. I will break down what I believe is notable. Let me know if I've missed anything. I never trash digged before so I'm bound to miss something.

Complete misses in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010 (Hayward), 2011 (TWICE), and 2017.

Trading first round picks out right for the likes of Brendan Haywood, Randy Foye, Mike Miller, Marcin Gortat, Markieff Morris and Bojan Bogdanovic. Trading a pick like this so many times at least we should of had one star. This was either one year rentals and just ok players for a couple years (Haywood was 9 seasons). What a great way to use first round draft picks (I'm being sarcastic if you are reading Ernie)

Outside of Bradley Beal and Troy Brown Jr. there is no other first round draft pick on this roster from 2011 to now.

First Round Draft Picks from 2013-2017 so far has resulted in Trevor Ariza, Bobby Porter, Wesley Johnson, and Jabari Parker (Championship!). The 2019-2020 season is expected to have only Ariza and maybe either (or neither) Porter or Parker (no way we keep both). So five first round draft picks may equal only Trevor Ariza. Bringing back Trevor Ariza is the only player we got from this. Trading away a 23 year old with potential in Kelly Oubre Jr. for a declining 34 year old in Trevor Ariza..... ok

Notable Players

Antawn Jamison is the product of the 2004 and 2005 first round draft picks.
Nene is the product of the 2007, 2008, and 2011 first round draft picks.
Wesley Johnson is the product of the 2004, 2006, and 2016 draft picks
Trevor Ariza is the product of the 2014 and 2015 first round draft picks.

This is mediocre drafting and trades for a GM that has kept his job for 16 seasons. Now we compare this to the Toronto Raptors set of GM's. Spoiler Alert: It gets ugly in the beginning but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

There is a reason why Rob Babcock lasted for two seasons so I won't bother. Bryan Colangelo was Ernie Grunfeld level. Bryan could not create a team around Chris Bosh with his failed draft picks and trades. Speaking of Bosh, Bryan traded him away for two 2011 1st Round Draft Picks and didn't manage to do anything with those picks. Colangelo's best pick was DeMar Derozan at #9 back in 2009. Everything else was mediocre.

Now for the star of the show. Masai Ujiri is money. Cardi B's "Money" ad lib plays in my head on every decision I look at on Masai Ujiri's FRAT (Money!). Goodness I'm so jealous. First the negatives. Could not get anything for the 2014 1st Round Draft Pick except for cash and a TPE. 2018 was just a cash dump after aquiring Kawhai Leonard (Not much of a negative). That's it. Now the positives (Money!).

"Money"

Do a CTRL + F and type in "MU". You can see the trades he made. Was able to obtain an extra 2016 – 1st Round Draft Pick which he drafted the rising star Pascal Siakam in 2016. If Kawhi Leonard doesn't work out he is clearly NEXT.

Was able to obtain Marc Gasol. Following FRAT he is made up of the 2011 and 2015 First Round Draft picks.

Ujiri is taking a shot on Kawhi Leonard since he might leave. If stays that would be amazing and definitley a risk willing to take. This took the 2009, 2016, and a future 2019 1st Round Draft Pick.

Notable Players

Kyle Lowry is the product of 2013 1st Round Draft Pick
Pascal Siakam is the product of 2016 1st Round Draft Pick
Ogugua Anunoby is the product of 2017 1st Round Draft Pick
Serge Ibaka  is the product of the 2012 and 2017 first round draft picks
Marc Gasol is the product of the 2011 and 2015 first round draft picks
Kawhi Leonard is the product of the 2007, 2008, and 2011 first round draft picks

The reason why I chose Toronto as a team to compare was because they didn't stick with the same bad GM for over 10 years. The ownership noticed the GM position wasn't working and made a change. Now they are one of the best teams in the East and will be for years to come. They are set for the now (Kawhi Leonard, Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol, Kyle Lowry) and future (Kyle Lowry, Kawhi Leonard(?), Pascal Siakam, Ogugua Anunoby). The FRAT shows how embarrassingly Ernie Grunfeld is and how bad of an owner Ted Leonsis is by keeping him. Bravo to Toronto Raptors ownership. I truly am jealous. "Money"!

UPDATE 3/18/2019:

  • I'm editing the 2007 - 1st Round Draft Pick section of Ernie Grunfeld. I thought that 2014 2nd Round Draft Pick was sent to Washington (and thought that same pick was used for Jordan Clarkson). I have come to find out that the Philadelphia 76ers protected it. Ernie couldn't even get it unprotected. This is even worse ::facepalm::
  • Removing "Also the two failed backup point guards are amongst the 2007 FRAT." from last line of 2nd paragraph after what I learned.
  • Removing 2003 - 1st Round Draft Pick section of Ernie Grunfeld. Ernie was hired days after the 2003 draft so he had no involvement with the Jarvis Hayes pick.
